a few factoids & an ER story thrown in for no extra charge

  • Liberia is one of the few countries that requires yellow fever vaccinations.
  • Yellow fever is carried by mosquitoes, with which Liberia is well "blessed"
  • Yellow fever has a vaccination (good)
  • Yellow fever vaccine is incubated in eggs
  • Yellow fever vaccine is therefore not recommended to folks allergic to eggs
  • Angela is allergic to (raw) eggs (bad)
So I went to the travel clinic in March where it was decided that even though the egg allergy is minor, it would probably be good to not get the vaccine. I got a yellow waiver card to submit for the visa application, and bought a bunch of DEET.

Some time later, after discussions between me, the travel clinic, and the allergist, it was decided that since the allergy is minor it really might not be a bad idea to chance it and get the vaccination after all. To be on the safe side, they would give me the vaccination at the allergists' where they could watch me. Thus went today: Angela
  1. takes Zantac (an antihistamine)
  2. picks up vaccine from travel clinic
  3. takes vaccine to allergist
  4. gets scratch test done, which shows some small reaction to vaccine
  5. takes some liquid antihistamine
  6. receives the vaccine in four doses, with watching in between
  7. is observed for a while to make sure all is well
  8. feels a little 'hoppy' from the antihistamine, but is otherwise fine
  9. heads to work
  10. eats lunch & works for a while
  11. starts feeling her throat swell
  12. is driven to ER by coworker friend Marie
  13. is put on oxygen and given an IV
  14. is dosed with IV/shots of benedryl, zantac, prednisone and epinephrine
  15. is pretty knocked out AND hoppy with that stuff, but the airway clears
  16. is told that the reaction was on the serious end, but should be ok now
  17. is discharged with heaps o' prescriptions (zantac, prednisone and an epi-pen)
  18. is taken home (after picking up prescriptions) by Marie
  19. sleeps like crazy
  20. feeling better!
Good to know I'm good to go for the next 10 years or so. Hopefully by then Yellow Fever will be eradicated, right?! I will say I feel pretty dang privileged to have access to all these vaccinations in the first place. Liberian mosquitoes: bring it on!
